Version 3.0 Beta

December 31st, 2008 by Dario Solera | Filed under Community, Development.

As I am writing this, version ScrewTurn Wiki 3.0 Beta is available for download.

The release was scheduled for yesterday, and I originally wanted to post two videos:

  • upgrading from 2.0.x to 3.0 Beta (which is very straightforward)
  • 3.0 Beta walk-through

The problem is that for some reason, Wink and VirtualBox don’t seem to play well together. Wink just randomly crashes. And yes, I know that Camtasia Studio is cool, but I cannot purchase it at this moment. I deferred the videos to another day, sorry guys.

Version 3.0 Beta is, in my opinion, stable enough to be used in a low-traffic and non-mission-critical production environment, but you do this at your own risk. Be sure to make frequent back-ups (frequent = daily).

Important note: plugins developed for version 2.0 are not compatible with version 3.0, so you’ll have to delete them before upgrading. This also means that if you are running on SQL Server or MySQL, you cannot use this beta.

I put together a few screenshots.

Breadcrumbs Trail and Cross-Links

New “linkified” breadcrumbs trail, showing outgoing links for each visited page. New special tags display information about orphaned and wanted pages, as well as incoming and outgoing links for each page.

Quick Admin Tools

Quick administration tools for each page.

New Editor and Improved Snippets

New editor (with templates) and improved support for advanced parameterized snippets.

Index-Based Search Engine and Results

Fast index-based search engine, searching through pages, discussion messages, files and attachments*.

Administration Home

Administration Home, with a list of missing (inexistent) pages, and the status of the search engine index.

Users Administration and Permissions Management

User Account administration, with granular permissions control.

Namespaces Administration and Permissions Management

Namespace permissions management, with predefined permissions templates working like old-stlye wiki permissions.

Content Editing

New Content Editing tool, replacing the formerly-known “Meta Files” tab.

Files and Permissions Management

New file manager with support for granular permissions control.

*) Files and Attachments are not indexed, but their names are searched on-the-fly. Page content and discussions are indexed.

  1. Dario,
Very nice. Great work and kudos on the accolades you’ve earned for this project.

    Hello Dario,

  4. Hey Dario,

A little late to be posting this comment, but just thought I’d throw it out there for ya:

I finally dumped Wink and went with CamStudio – camstudio.org. I use it instead of Camtasia. Not sure if it’ll work any better with VirtualBox, but give it a try. I’ve found it to be more stable and Wink.

Check out Jing, by Camtasia…it’s really easy and free: http://www.jingproject.com/

@Darin: That looks cool, thank you for the link.

There needs to be way more push to get some better skins out of the box. I’m sorry but the current color scheme is horrible (I am sorry but I do care about color scheme especially if you’re using this company wide). You need a push like Subtext has done with getting people to create skins for this. Sure, we can customize it ourselves but sure would be nice to have some decent skins out of the box. I know of a graphic designer who may be interested but there needs to be more a push on the open source site to get participation.

I know this is open source and I hate complain but developers are not designers.

    why?

  10. Hi, do you have a site feed I can save? I looked around but couldn’t seem to find it, thanks in advance.
